Zell has no living real parents. He is an orphan like the rest of the gang. However, unlike the others, he was adopted into a loving home in Balamb.
There has been suggestions that Square had intended Zell to be a descendant of Cloud and Tifa. This theory has many believers as well as disbelievers. The only evidence to benefit this theory is as follows:
- He speaks of his grandfather who is a Soldier.
- Zell's fighting style and limit break is named after Tifa Lockheart's.
- He looks a little similar to Cloud
- Cloud often features in other games, so its not uncommon for him to go into the Final Fantasy 8 world, as he has featured in Final Fantasy Tactics.
His mother in Balamb is called, Ma Dincht and is fondly talked about by the other townsfolk. She tries to help everyone out.
